Coaches Outlook

Before I get started with our season outlook I would like to pass on to our Lava Bear Family the heartfelt condolences to Bradley Hughes’ family and love ones. Bradley is as much a part of this program as any other family member. I am not much for dedicating a season or playing for someone. This program has been about playing for us, the current Team and the Long Blue Line before us. I say this now more than ever, because Bradley is ‘us’ and will forever be a part of the Long Blue Line. We wear a Tank on our Helmet for you Bradley. May we make you proud tonight, this season, and forever. We love you.

As this city continues to grow and change one constant is the unwavering support for high school athletics. First and foremost, I would like to thank our community for your support. Whether as a fan in the stands, a boaster with a quick sponsorship of our programs, or even an atta boy in the supermarket to our players, it is all appreciated and still makes this place one of the most desirable places to live in all the Northwest. Thank you.

Graduating 30 seniors would be a source of heartburn and hair loss for any coach. My doctor gave me a clean bill of health and I haven’t had much change in hair growth. Much of it has to do with the fact that we are able to reload with 24 Seniors in this football class of 2025. Many have had varsity experience last year and are primed to continue to compete in the IMC and test their medal versus the rest of the state. The class of 2024 will be missed but the saying goes, “Once A Lava Bear, Always A Lava Bear” will always apply and we hope to see you on our sidelines because you will always be a part of this program.

As the Lava Bears embark on this 2025 football season, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude and share my excitement for the journey ahead. It’s an incredible honor to serve as the Head Coach of the Bend Senior High School and I am proud of the hard work, commitment, and growth I’ve seen from our players, coaches, and support staff throughout the offseason. The program has embodied our core tenants of Total Release mentality. With the senior class leading and 50 plus freshman sandwiching a power packed junior and sophomore class, this program is headed in the right direction.

This year’s team brings a strong mix of returning veterans and promising new talent. Our athletes have trained with intensity, bonded through shared goals, and committed themselves to not just being better players—but better young men. The adage of I won’t know how well I have done as a football coach until 10 years from now will always live with me as my most important goal. Seeing so many past Lava Bears thrive in our community and continue to support the Long Blue Line, is still the best part of the job.

This season we have emphasized mental discipline, self-accountability, and playing for something bigger than ourselves. Our boys have poured themselves into this program and take a great deal of pride in the Bear Claw and what it stands for. Every practice rep, film session, and weight room hour has been geared toward building upon the culture of STEP UP. We’re excited about the challenges ahead. Our schedule is competitive, and every Friday night will demand our best. But we are ready. We are committed to representing Bend Senior High School with pride, loyalty, and class—win or lose.

One of the cornerstones of this program is gratitude. To be grateful doesn’t cost a cent but means the world. To be grateful builds community, and that is what being a Lava Bear is all about. Debbie Christian, our School Accountant, is second to none. She will be so upset that I am ‘wasting ink,’ as she will say, but if it were not for Debbie, we would not be able to do what we do. She is the rock that we stand on daily and is always on speed dial for all of our coaches in this program as well as our school. Debbie has helped with every aspect of finances for our program over the last 20 years. Whether it be to help clear a student in the beginning process, helping students pay for spirit packs during the summer, collect fundraising dollars, be present at the front gates at so many home games taking tickets, help bonehead coaches pay bills in a timely fashion, remind same bonehead coaches to write a thank you card to sponsors, and so much more. For the last 20 years at Bend High, she has been a selfless servant leader that I could not imagine being able to do what we do without her. Debbie from the bottom of our hearts at Bend Football ‘Thank You’ for making this place so special.

In summation, after two years as your head coach, I would again like to thank the administration at Bend High for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be the Bend Lava Bear football coach. Under Principal Chris Reese’s tenure at Bend High, he has continued the tradition of employing educators who want to help students in extracurricular programs. We are blessed to have nine men who take a great deal of pride in their paying job as teachers, as well as their passion side gigs as coaches of your young men. These teacher-coaches will be asked on many occasions if they are going to the game this Friday night because the average student doesn’t see them as football coaches. These men take a great deal of pride in this, and it is a direct result of our administration.

It is our hope that what you see on the field tonight and in the community afterward will make you proud to be a part of this family. We’re glad you are here tonight to support us, and we hope to give a great effort this season.

TR!!! STEP UP!!! Go Lava Bears!
